As you know, Faith N Friends does not “bail” horses from Kill Pens. We don’t accept bailed horses. We will, when possible, attend auctions and we will happily help others learn how to purchase FROM the auction – but we don’t support kill buyers. And we don’t support those who do bail from kill buyers. It breaks our hearts to see these horses, but we know we’d be feeding the problem, not fixing it.
Bailed horses are most often in worse straits when “rescued” – rescuers often can’t afford to keep the horse(s) or don’t know how to care for them. So horses often starve or become ill and go without treatment. We make sure our horses are provided all necessary veterinarian, farrier, and feed care. It’s expensive – but that’s how good stewardship works.
Buyers aren’t usually vetted, so the one who “saved” the horse often sells it to someone who mistreats or doesn’t care for them appropriately. We require references, both personal and vet/farrier, and we meet the adopters to make sure they and their preferred horse are a good fit. We want everyone to be successful. This doesn’t happen for bailed horses.
Bailing horses doesn’t stop horse slaughter. It increases it. Don’t put money in a kill buyer’s pocket. Adopt. Buy directly from the auction. Support your local rescues. Talk to your local, state, and federal governments to change the laws. Support the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act (H.R. 961/S. 2006).
We’re not alone. See more info from Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue here.
