About Us

Teaching Baby Donkey how to drink from a bowlFaith N Friends is a non-profit 501(c) 3 horse rescue and sanctuary in Knoxville TN. We accept owner surrenders, neglect cases, slaughter sale intercepts, and more. We provide owner education and assistance for the proper care and feeding of their horses and hoof maintenance. Faith N Friends uses equines and other animals in a therapy program for disabled and chronically ill children. We also host pony parties, entertaining and educating the public about horses and horse rescue.

Faith N Friends was established in 2016 and is fully donation-funded and volunteer-run. We currently have an average volunteer force of 10-15 people and several dozen dedicated supporters. We are funded primarily with private donations.

We coordinate with local veterinarians and equestrian services, including therapy services, transportation, and local businesses. We have contacts throughout Tennessee and the surrounding states.

About the Position

Internships are offered quarterly and will be for a minimum of 20 hours/week. This time will include some weekend work and potential holiday work. Interns will gain hands-on experience in a variety of shelter and farm aspects in addition to helping build a knowledge base for operating all aspects of equine rescue and sanctuary.

Interns will assist with the variety of animal care tasks at Faith N Friends. This may include feeding, grooming, first aid and medicating, assisting with farrier care, riding, intake and evaluation of surrendered horses, and adoption screening. Initially, these tasks will be performed under the supervision of the CEO or the Volunteer Supervisor. On demonstration of competency, the intern may be tasked with continuing without close supervision.

The intern may be asked to fill in for volunteer tasks should one or more volunteers be unavailable. These tasks include cleaning tack, property and fence maintenance, and resupplying.

Additional intern tasks shall include assistance with clerical needs, public relations, event attendance, and event planning.

Requirements:

  • Age: Must be 18 or over
  • Must have a strong interest in animal welfare, be a self-starter, and exhibit a willingness to learn.
  • Experience with equine care preferred.
  • Preference is given to students considering a career in equine programs or veterinary medicine.
  • We will look for the same qualities that we find in our volunteers: enthusiastic, mature, hard-working people who work with the overall team in an open and supportive manner.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50lbs on a daily basis.
  • Strong verbal communication skills or willingness to learn
  • Ability to work independently and work as a member of a team
