For the horse owner, disaster preparedness is imperative. Because of their size and transportation needs, handling an emergency situation or a natural disaster takes extra consideration. The time to plan is well before a situation develops. During an emergency, time is limited.

  • Know where you can take your horse(s) in an emergency. Make arrangements in advance with a friend or another horse owner to stable or board your horse. If possible, have a backup plan.
  • Let friends, neighbors, and family know your plans. Keep written instructions in an easily accessible location in the event that you are not able to be present during the emergency.
  • Keep copies of your horses’ important papers in a waterproof envelope in a safe place with your other important papers.
  • Keep a basic first aid kit readily available.
  • Have a supply of water, feed, medications, etc on hand for each horse. Make sure you have enough to last several days.
  • Practice loading and unloading your horses beforehand. Make sure they are comfortable with loading.
  • Keep each horse’s name and your emergency information with his halter.

We all hope that we never need the precautions. In the event that disaster strikes, you’ll be happy you prepared. And so will your horses.
