Emergency and Disaster Planning

Disaster planning is an integral part of any emergency management plan. It can help prepare you for the worst, and it can also prevent you from accidentally injuring your horses.

• Ready your horses – Make sure your horses are microchipped or otherwise marked for easy identification. Make sure that they are trained to lead, load, and be handled by strangers. If possible, ask local off-duty firefighters to help desensitize your horses to standard firefighter gear.

• Minimize Fire Risks – Keep fire extinguishers easily accessible in multiple areas of your barn. Keep your barn clean and free of any fire hazards. Practice good fire safety, including instituting a No Smoking policy and minimizing or removing electrical appliances like heaters and fans.

• Have an acknowledged temporary caregiver should you have to evacuate your horses.

• Know your evacuation route(s).

• Make and maintain an emergency kit. Include vet records, Coggins, ownership paperwork, extra tack, and a good equine first aid kit.

Emergencies happen. For your peace of mind and your horses’ safety, be prepared!
